You really can’t go wrong with either the Nature’s Head or the Airhead composting toilet. Both are great products that work well and last a long time.

While there are differences in the two toilets, they’re fairly minor things. Ultimately, the best one for you comes down to personal preferences and how you intend to use them.

Ways the Airhead and Nature’s Head composting toilets are similar:

• Both are urine-diverting composting toilets
• Both are very similar in price (about $65 difference between the two)
• Both use 12v fans to ‘vent’ the toilet, which also helps bring fresh oxygen in for the composting process

When it comes to Airhead vs Nature’s Head composting toilet there are a few primary differences:

• Nature’s Head has slightly more capacity for liquids and solids than Airhead
• Airhead composting toilet allows you to empty the liquids without having to open the solids tank. Nature’s Head requires you to open the solids tank to remove the liquids container
• Airhead composting toilet has customizable options for agitator handle placement, whereas Nature’s Head only has a right-sided option
• Airhead uses a residential-style toilet seat… which is more comfortable than the molded plastic Nature’s Head comes with

Pricing for Airhead vs Nature’s Head composting toilets is actually pretty similar. The Airhead generally retails for $1,095 while Nature’s Head sells for around $1,030.

When it comes to price only, Nature’s Head is the better value. Not only is it less expensive, but you also get a larger capacity for liquid and solid storage.

Both Airhead and Nature’s Head have separate storage for liquids and solids. However, Nature’s Head offers slightly more capacity for both liquids and solids.

In my opinion, more liquid capacity is a great thing (because this is what you’ll end up dumping every 1-2 days), but the solids capacity is less important because you already have several weeks worth of use.

Essentially, you’ll definitely notice a difference if you have more liquids capacity, but the solids capacity increase is less impactful to daily life.

When it comes to features, there’s honestly only so much you can add onto a composting toilet. Both Airhead and Nature’s Head have solids agitators (the thing that stirs up the solids to help aid the composting process by delivering fresh oxygen throughout).

The benefit to Airhead over Nature’s Head is the option to choose which side of the composting toilet the agitator handle is mounted on. This is a game changer when deciding your layout. For example, my toilet with the wall on its left side, so having the agitator on the right side makes it much easier to access, and allows me to mount the toilet closer to the wall and out of the way. Nature’s Head does not have this option.

Additionally, both toilets come with a fan which runs on 12v’s and exhausts air out of the solids bin and through a vent in your van floor or wall.

Which One Is Better?: Airhead Vs Nature’s Head Composting Toilet

When I was deciding between Airhead vs Nature’s Head composting toilet for my van, I ultimately decided to buy the Airhead composting toilet.

I like that it uses a residential toilet seat (feels more “normal”) and I appreciated that I could pick the side my agitator handle would be on – for my van build, having a left-side mounted handle gave me more options for mounting locations.

Ultimately, I think Airhead is a better overall value than Nature’s Head, even though it’s about $65 more.

The materials are high quality, and the entire system is enclosed so you don’t have to worry about bugs finding their way into your solids container and laying eggs (which can become magots).

In fact, I’ve only ever heard of people having bug problems with Nature’s Head – I’ve never heard of an Airhead user having this problem. I think this is due to the o-rings which seal the toilet lid to the seat, and the seat to the bowl. Plus, there are several screens fitted into the unit which still allow in the oxygen needed for composting, but keep the unwanted visitors out.

However, (plot twist) if I were building a new van I’d actually not choose Airhead or Nature’s Head. Simply because they’re expensive (I’ve not no gripes with the quality of these toilets!) There’s so many great options on the market today that didn’t exist a few years ago. I wrote a full review on the best composting toilets here.
