There are many options and price ranges when it comes to selecting the best 12v fridge for van and RV life. 12v refrigerators can range from $200 all the way up to nearly $2,000 – so how do you know which one is worth it?

After a lot of research selecting my own 12v fridge I’ve found the best 12v RV refrigerators for every budget! I provide details and pros/cons for each below, as well as an easy comparison chart so you can quickly see differences and decide which one is right for you.

Best 12v Fridge For Van Or RV Life

There’s a number of things to consider when choosing the best 12v fridge. Of course, cost is a big factor, but you’ll also want to look at power consumption and design quality.

If you’re a full-timer, then the higher quality (and more expensive) 12v refrigerators are likely your best option. You’ll want a high-quality fridge that can hold up to harsh conditions, bumpy washboard roads, and significant changes in temperature and humidity as you travel.

However, if you’re a weekend warrior a budget 12v fridge may be the best fit for your needs.

Below is a list of the best 12v refrigerator brands and an overview of how they compare to one another.

NOTE: Avg daily power consumption is based on 12v connection with ambient temperatures between 77°F – 90°F.

How To Choose The Best 12v Refrigerator

There is no one-size-fits-all answer for choosing the best 12v refrigerator; it depends on how you plan to use it.

Size And Capacity

12v refrigerators come in a wide variety of sizes. You’ll want to pick the size that best suits your needs.

I recommend oversizing slightly if you have the space. Extra space can be used to store dry goods if you’re short on cabinet space. However, perishable foods can’t be stored outside of your fridge so you’ll definitely want to have a large enough 12v fridge.

Climate And Temperature

If you will be traveling in very hot or humid climates, you’ll want to consider more energy efficient 12v refrigerator options.

When the ambient temperatures (temperature inside your camper) are hotter, the compressor has to turn on more frequently to keep the contents of your refrigerator cool.

The more frequently the compressor runs, the more battery power your 12v fridge will consume.

In cases of frequent compressor use, the energy efficiency of your 12v refrigerator will be incredibly important.

If you’ll frequently be in climates above 90°F (32°C), I recommend the Isotherm Cruise Elegance 12v fridge.

For travel to places that rarely exceeds 90°F (32°C), most of the 12v refrigerators on this list will be suitable.

Best Upright 12v Fridge Options (Front Load)

This first category highlights the best 12v refrigerators within the upright category. These are your “standard” refrigerator model which is front-loaded and typically installed into your base cabinets.

Upright refrigerators tend to be more popular because they’re easier to keep organized. Additionally, they’re easier to install as they do not require a drawer or slide to mount.

OFF Indel B Cruise 12v Fridge & Freezer

Cruise 12v fridge models from OFF Indel B are overall the best 12v refrigerators for vans and RVs. They strike a great balance of energy efficiency, quality materials and overall cost.

NOTE: OFF Indel B Cruise is only available in black. They can operate on 12v or 24v DC power, but not on AC power.

While OFF Indel B refrigerators look extremely similar to Isotherm refrigerators, they are constructed with different materials.

Isotherm refrigerators are built for marine use in extremely humid environments with salt air. As a result, the must have extremely corrosion resistant materials.

While Isotherm refrigerators are higher quality (more on these later!), they are overkill for most overlanding needs (and nearly twice as expensive.)

For camper vans and RVs, the OFF Indel B refrigerators are a more appropriate 12v fridge option.

There is one big similarity between OFF Indel B and Isotherm fridges, though. They both use SECOP compressors, which is widely regarded as the best 12v compressor available.

All OFF Indel B Cruise refrigerators on this list have a SECOP BD35F compressor (except for the 86L superslim model which uses a SECOP BD1.4 VSD-HD compressor.)

OFF Indel B Elite 12v Fridge & Freezer

Elite models are similar to the Cruise models by OFF Indel B, with a few key differences.

All of the Elite models are offered in a stainless steal look. Keep in mind, these are not real stainless steal (you’ll need to upgrade to the Isotherm refrigerators for that!)

Compared to Cruise models, the Elite line offers better energy efficiency. Although, it’s not a significant improvement so unless you’re after the stainless steal look, you may be better with the Cruise line which $100-$200 less.

WARRANTY: OFF Indel B offers a 2 year warranty for their 12v refrigerators which includes parts and labor.

Dometic NRX Classic 12v Fridge Freezer

Dometic NRX 12v refrigerators replace the discontinued Dometic CRX line. They’ve been redesigned to be more energy efficient (around a 9% improvement) and use higher quality insulation materials.

There are two models of NRX 12v refrigerators for vans and RVs; Classic and Superior.

NRX Classic refrigerators have an upgraded compressor capable of eco, quiet and freezer mode. Freezer mode is handy because you can turn the entire refrigerator into a freezer when you need more capacity.

Classic models also have a removable freezer compartment and an optional bridge component to connect to AC power (out-of-the-box it just runs on 12v/24v DC.)

All NRX-Classic refrigerators come with a dark gray door.

WARRANTY: Dometic provides a 2 year warranty that covers labor, parts and shipping for the original purchaser.

Dometic NRX Superior 12v Fridge Freezer

NRX Superior refrigerators have the same great features as the classic models, as well as a stainless steal door and shelves that are corrosion resistant. Additionally, they come standard with AC or DC power compatibility.

The Classic lineup is perfect for van or RV refrigerators, while the Superior lineup is intended for marine use where anti-corrosive materials are necessary.

Across both models, you can expect similar performance in terms of power consumption and noise.

NOTE: There is also a Dometic NRX-Economy line. These do not have a freezer compartment. Additionally, they have a lower quality compressor that is not as energy efficient, and cannot be set to eco, silent or freezer modes.

WARRANTY: Dometic provides a 2 year warranty that covers labor, parts and shipping for the original purchaser.

Isotherm Cruise Elegance 12v Refrigerator

For a long time, Isotherm Cruise Elegance dominated the top of the best 12v fridge lists, and for good reason.

Isotherm is a very well established brand in the marine space, and they make exceptionally high-quality components.

In fact, this is the refrigerator I installed in my campervan and I LOVE it!

However, in recent years more options have hit the market and for that reason, I no longer think Isotherm is the best 12v fridge available. (but not because it’s not an outstanding fridge, just because there are comparable options available for less!)

You can think of Isotherm Cruise Elegance as the big sister to OFF Indel B Cruise and Elite refrigerators. Same great base components, but Isotherm comes with more corrosion resistant materials (that also drive up the cost) so they can withstand years of salt water exposure.

If you’re looking for a camper van or RV fridge, the Isotherm is more than you’ll actually need.

I recommend Isotherm for two specific use cases; boats and/or traveling in tropical climates where your fridge has to run nearly constantly to keep contents cool. With continuous use the energy efficiency stacks up to a noticeable savings.

WARRANTY: Isotherm offers a generous 5 year warranty on their compressors, and a 2 year warranty on all other parts. However, labor is only covered within the first year.

BODEGA Best Budget 12v Fridge For Van Life (Upright)

The BODEGA line of refrigerators are the best budget 12v fridges for van life in the upright (front-loading) category. They come in a variety of sizes (45L to 110L) ranging from $510 to $740.

These are a great alternative to Isotherm or OFF Indel B refrigerators, with many of the same features like a reversible door, ability to run on 12v or 24v systems, and quiet operation.

Additionally, BODEGA 12v refrigerators can be operated with a mobile app. However, the app only works on one device at a time, so multiple users cannot have their own access.

A majority of their refrigerators have an integrated freezer nested in the refrigerator compartment. However, with the 80L model you have an independent freezer zone.

One important thing to note is their strange wording about the warranty provided. They indicate “1 year maintenance”, which could be a simple translation error, or it could actually mean only maintenance (not repair) is provided within the first year.

Second, they “offer 5 years life span on the compressor” which, again, is a bit misleading. A life span is not a statement of warranty, just fancy marketing lingo. There’s wiggle room here for them to back out of compressor repairs within the first 5 years.

WARRANTY: “offer 5 years life span on the compressor” and “1 year maintenance” on all other parts.

RecPro Upright 12v RV Refrigerator

RecPro makes the list of best 12v refrigerators, but barely. The price is competitive for the 12v fridge market, but the power consumption is hefty.

This is an ideal 12v refrigerator for RVs, or campers that are generally connected to shore power and aren’t reliant on solar. For the capacity, the power consumption is a lot (largely due to lower quality insulation materials, which drive down the cost.)

One significant drawback to the RecPro 12v fridge is the lack of freezer. There is no freezer compartment, and the temperature cannot be set below 32°F.

A minor nit-pick of mine are the glass shelves, which seem like an accident waiting to happen on a bumpy back road. Especially considering the RecPro refrigerators do not have mounting points, so “installation” is setting them on a flat surface and hoping for the best.

These 12v refrigerators are wired to operate on 12v only, with no 24v option like many of the other refrigerators in this article. However, this will likely only be a drawback for a small number of consumers.

WARRANTY: RecPro offers a 1 year warranty on their 12v refrigerators, but only cover parts and not labor. Additionally, they may use used parts under warranty and you are not guaranteed a new replacement part. Their warranty also specifies that there is no guaranteed timeframe for a repair to be completed, so you may be without your fridge for a while.

Best Chest 12v Fridge Options (Top Load)

These 12v refrigerators are chest-style (also referred to as 12v Electric Coolers), which means they load from the top.

Smaller sizes tend to offer only one cooling zone (often can be set to fridge or freezer temperatures), while many of the larger models come with two compartments for simultaneous 12v fridge freezer operations.

In general, top loading 12v refrigerators lose less cool air when you open them compared to front loading refrigerators (which allow cool air at the bottom of the fridge to “fall out”).

While the compressors are very similar in terms of efficiency, chest style refrigerators typically run less frequently, which means they use less power than comparable upright models.

BougeRV CR Pro Best Budget 12v Fridge For Van Life (Chest)

BougeRV offers the best budget 12v fridge on the market… with multiple sizes available for less than $300! These portable refrigerators are a great option, but they’re relatively small and aren’t ideal for longer trips.

If you’re looking for an easy 12v refrigerator for a road trip or weekend getaways, then the BougeRV CRPro is a great choice! However, I wouldn’t recommend this for multi-week or full-time travel as they don’t sell options large enough for more than a few days worth of groceries.

BougeRV CR Pro 12v refrigerators are chest-style, meaning they’re top loading. Typically, top loading RV refrigerators are more energy efficient, because the cold air sinks to the bottom and doesn’t “fall out” when you open the lid.

There’s only one compartment in these refrigerators, but you can choose whether to set the temperature to a fridge or freezer range.

These 12v refrigerators would also be a great option if you already have a reliable fridge but are looking for additional freezer space on longer trips.

BougeRV CR Pro also comes with a small storage compartment, which can hold a power bank. This allows you to dedicate a battery for your fridge, making it extremely portable and not reliant on a hard-wired connection.

Of course, you always have the option to plug directly into your vehicle’s power source with the provided AC or DC power cords.

WARRANTY: 2 years for parts, but the customer is responsible for shipping to/from warranty repair services (which may be cost prohibitive, considering the lower cost to purchase a brand new unit and forgo repairs.) Ultimately, it’s unlikely the warranty would be worth pursuing.

Dometic CFX5 Electric Cooler

Technically, the Dometic CFX5 is considered an electric cooler. It’s a chest-style (load from the top, not the front) 12v refrigerator.

Personally, I find an upright (front-loading) refrigerator much easier to use on a daily basis, but I can understand the appeal of a chest-style fridge for specific layouts that may not have many installation options for a standard 12v fridge.

Larger models offer dual-zones, meaning you can use fridge and freezer capabilities simultaneously. Unfortunately, CFX5 55 and smaller only have one zone for cooling.

These come standard with power cords for 12v/24v systems as well as 120v systems.

Additionally, Dometic CFX5 coolers offer an extremely versatile temperature range; as low as -7°F for deep freezing, all the way up to 68°F if you’re just looking to chill some beverages without drawing too much power.

All of these settings can be conveniently adjusted with the bluetooth mobile app.

WARRANTY: Dometic offers a 3-year warranty on their CFX5 12v refrigerators. Return shipping is free to the customer, and the warranty covers a replacement or refund. The Dometic warranty exceeds what is offered for some of the cheaper budget 12v refrigerators that only provide repairs and/or do not cover the cost of shipping.

ICECO VL Pro 12v Refrigerators

ICECO 12v refrigerators are known for top quality and energy efficiency. Compared with Dometic CFX5 electric coolers, it really comes down to model. For smaller 12v refrigerators (under 60L) ICECO is the better value. However, for larger models (over 75L) Dometic offers more energy efficiency for less cost.

There are two popular ICECO models; VL Pro and APL. The VL Pro is more durable and generally the better choice for most travelers, but the APL (details below) offers a lighter-weight aluminum option with a few more bells and whistles.

One of the best features of the ICECO VL Pro 12v fridge is the SECOP compressor. This is the same brand used in top-of-the-line 12v refrigerators, like Isotherm. Not only is it incredibly energy efficient, it’s also extremely quiet and comes with a 5 year warranty.

All ICECO VL Pro models come with reversible lids that can open from either side and a cooling range from 0°F to 50°F. However, smaller models offer only one compartment (noted by ProS in the model name, S=single).

If you’re looking for two zones (fridge and freezer) you’ll need to buy the 75L model (ProD model name, D=dual.)

Not only do these electric coolers operate on 12v or 24v DC power, they can also be used with 110-240v AC power (which makes it really convenient to pre-chill your cooler at home before hitting the road.)

With all the required power cords included, it’s easy to plug into your vehicles cigarette outlet, a portable power station, or your campers 12v system.

ICECO also offers a detachable magnetic battery that easily attaches to the side of the refrigerator for ultimate portability. Under typical use, this battery is enough to power up to 1 day of use before recharging.

WARRANTY: ICECO offers a 1 year local warranty (US & Canada) on parts, and a 5 year warranty on the SECOP compressor.

TIP: In order to use the ICECO warranty, you must provide the serial number for your 12v fridge. The serial number is on the original boxing and not the unit itself, so make sure you take a photo before you throw out the packaging.

ICECO APL 12v Refrigerators

While ICECO APL 12v refrigerators are fairly similar to the VL Pro series, they retail for a higher price and are made with aluminum instead of steal in order to reduce weight and make them more portable.

These 12v electric cooler models have dual zones, meaning you can set either compartment to fridge or freezer temperatures. However, the single lid design means both compartments open every time you need to access the contents inside.

Additionally, APL55 models have the ability to control the fridge remotely via mobile app.

One of the nicest features of the ICECO 12v refrigerators is their SECOP compressor. It’s likely something you’ll never think about after buying this fridge, but that’s because it won’t be draining your battery or making loud noises. It’s also built to last, so it’s unlikely you’ll need the 5 year compressor warranty either.

WARRANTY: ICECO offers a 1 year local warranty (US & Canada) on parts, and a 5 year warranty on the SECOP compressor.
